Message from the Executive Director
Dear Retired Members,
I don’t know about you, but I am so happy that the cold weather has ended and we can embrace the sunshine! The warmer weather makes it much easier for everyone to get out and become more active.
As we move toward the summer months, I’m reminded that we have been talking together for over a year now about our health journeys—and what a year it has been! It seems like just yesterday that we started this conversation and I have been so personally inspired to hear the stories shared by 1199ers—both retired members and those still on the job. Part of the reason I value this dialogue is because I believe it’s necessary to change the way we think about our health.
Lately, much of the conversation has turned to self-care and incorporating healthy habits as important parts of preventive healthcare. As 1199ers, we haven’t just been talking about it; we have been living it. Like many of you, my journey includes eating healthier foods, moving more, getting enough sleep and managing my stress levels. And most of us agree—it’s not always easy.
That’s why we’re all so much better off when we get involved and help one another. Here at the Benefit Funds, we’re supporting your efforts to reconnect by offering in-person classes and chapter meetings! Most will also be available via Zoom if you would rather join from home, so please take a moment to look at the schedule in this newsletter to find out more about these opportunities.
I remain convinced that staying connected and maintaining our health is the key to unlocking life’s joys, especially in retirement. In this issue, our “Healthy Living Spotlight” focuses on the importance of colorectal cancer screenings. Building a good relationship with your healthcare provider and having regular screenings is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy and active.
Finally, I’m really excited to unveil that we now have our own 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds YouTube channel. You can find out about this and so much more inside this Retired Members Bulletin, so I encourage you to check it out!
In good health,
Donna Rey, EdD

Un Mensaje de la Directora Ejecutiva
Estimados miembros jubilados:
Donna Rey, EdD

President,

President’s Message
Spring greetings! Isn’t it amazing to witness the changing of the seasons? As I look out my window, I’m delighted to witness this period of renewal and change and can’t help but think of the ways nature is reflected in our lives. We never stop evolving, growing and taking on new challenges—and there is always time to reevaluate our healthy living goals and get back on track if we need to.
Our “Retired, but Active” community remains strong—due largely to the measures you take to protect your personal health and the health of your communities. Keeping an active mind is the key to sustaining your mental health and is more important than ever. The Retired Members Division offers many ways for you to engage—whether it’s taking an online exercise class or building a new skill set at one of our in-person classes at our Manhattan location, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
Now is also a great time to schedule your annual checkup with your doctor, along with any preventive screenings that are due. Annual exams give you a clear picture of how you’re doing, help you manage ongoing conditions and give you a head start on treating new issues that may come up. Don’t let illness sneak up on you—schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor today.
As we emerge from another winter season, I hope you feel encouraged and excited by the spirit of renewal and take steps to protect your mind and body. Remember: together we’re stronger—reach out for assistance if you need it by calling (646) 473-8666 or (800) 575-7771 for those outside of New York.
In solidarity,
Mary Stovall-Merrill
Mensaje de la Presidenta
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
¡Saludos primaverales!
Mary Stovall-Merrill
Colonoscopies Can Save Lives!
Getting screened for colorectal cancer lets you know where you stand, and early detection gives you the opportunity to start treatment as soon as possible, which can be lifesaving. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a colonoscopy every 10 years for adults ages 45 to 75, but there are other screening methods that can be done from the comfort of your home. If you have a personal or family history of cancer or have any symptoms of colorectal cancer (changes in bowel habits, fatigue and abdominal discomfort), it’s important that you get checked out as soon as possible.
To get started, call your primary care physician to schedule an appointment to discuss which colorectal cancer screening method is right for you.

George Gresham
President,
1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East
A Message From George Gresham
Although Juneteenth has been celebrated for 160 years—primarily by Black communities mainly in the South—it was finally recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed it into law.
More than a century and a half earlier, on September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln announced that the Emancipation Proclamation would go into effect on January 1, 1863, promising freedom to enslaved people in all of the traitorous Confederate states, including Texas. Of course, the slaveholders were not about to voluntarily free those they held in bondage. So, enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied on the advance of Union troops. Texas, as the most remote state of the former Confederacy, had seen an expansion of slavery because the presence of Union troops was low.
It wasn’t until June 19, 1865—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War—when U.S. Major General Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston that emancipation was proclaimed in Texas and the last of the enslaved were freed. The name Juneteenth is a mixing of the words “June” and “nineteenth” and celebrates the end of 250 years of slavery. Juneteenth has since been observed annually, often broadly celebrating African-American culture.
Early celebrations date back to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in the South. Those who came north and west in the Great Migration of the early 20th century brought these celebrations to the rest of the country. Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938, and by legislation in 1979, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia has formally recognized the holiday in some way.
The holiday is considered the longest-running African-American holiday and has been called America’s second Independence Day. Juneteenth celebrations historically have three goals: to celebrate, to educate and to agitate.
Early celebrations consisted of baseball, fishing, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, blues festivals, voter registration and Miss Juneteenth contests. African-Americans were often prohibited from using public facilities for their celebrations, so they were often held at churches.
In our recently secured contract with the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes in New York, we won the addition of Juneteenth as a paid holiday for our members. This is a terrific achievement, but we have hundreds of other contracts in our hospitals, nursing homes and home care agencies from the Canadian border to Florida. And all of our sisters and brothers should enjoy a Juneteenth paid holiday the same as our members in New York’s League institutions and facilities. So, when contract renewal comes up next time—wherever and whenever it is—we will make that one of our demands. We are one union after all.
Meantime, I want to wish all of our 1199 family—especially you, our veteran members—a wonderful Juneteenth this year.
In solidarity,

Un Mensaje De George Gresham
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
George Gresham
